the Windward side
Byodo-In Temple
A red Japanese temple at the foot of the cliffs, with koi ponds and a big bell.

Why go
Unexpectedly peaceful, and beautiful against the green mountains.

It sits inside a working cemetery. $10 to enter for ages 13 to 64, $8 for over-65s, $6 for children 2 to 12 - and parking is $6 an hour on top. Card only: they do not take cash.

Getting there
Driving times on real roads, from the same data the trip planner routes on — not straight-line distance.
| From Waikīkī | 36 min | 16.5 miles |
|---|---|---|
| From HNL airport | 48 min | 21 miles |
| From Kailua | 23 min | 9.6 miles |
| From Downtown Honolulu | 29 min | 13.5 miles |
Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
