the Windward side
Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden
A huge free garden with a road running straight at the green cliffs.

Why go
The cliff wall behind it is the most dramatic backdrop on the island.
The catch
Closed every Thursday, which catches people out - and 9am to 4pm the rest of the week. Standing in the road for photos is not allowed and is enforced. It rains here often; that is why it is so green.

Getting there
Driving times on real roads, from the same data the trip planner routes on — not straight-line distance.
| From Waikīkī | 32 min | 14.7 miles |
|---|---|---|
| From HNL airport | 45 min | 19.2 miles |
| From Kailua | 17 min | 6.8 miles |
| From Downtown Honolulu | 26 min | 11.6 miles |
Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
