Honolulu
USS Arizona Memorial
A white memorial built over a sunken battleship. Over a thousand sailors are still below.

Why go
Quiet, moving, and unlike anywhere else. You reach it by boat.
The catch
It is a war grave. The programme itself is free, but Recreation.gov adds a $1 non-refundable booking fee per ticket, and slots are released on a schedule and go fast. Parking at the visitor centre is $7 a day.

Getting there
Driving times on real roads, from the same data the trip planner routes on — not straight-line distance.
| From Waikīkī | 28 min | 14.1 miles |
|---|---|---|
| From HNL airport | 29 min | 10.6 miles |
| From Downtown Honolulu | 21 min | 10.8 miles |
| From Ala Moana | 24 min | 12.1 miles |
Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
