the North Shore
Old Waialua Sugar Mill
The shut sugar mill at Waialua, now coffee roasting, soap making and a few shops in the old buildings.
Why go
It is the clearest thing left of the industry that built these towns, and the coffee and chocolate are made on the spot.
The catch
Small and quiet, and several units are shut midweek. The mill itself is derelict and fenced; you are looking at it, not going in.

Getting there
Driving times on real roads, from the same data the trip planner routes on — not straight-line distance.
| From Waikīkī | 57 min | 34.1 miles |
|---|---|---|
| From HNL airport | 59 min | 30.6 miles |
| From Hale‘iwa | 7 min | 2.5 miles |
| From Turtle Bay | 33 min | 14.9 miles |
Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
