Honolulu

Kawaiahao Church

The coral-block church at the centre of downtown, built from reef quarried by hand.

Kawaiahao Church

Why go

Fourteen thousand blocks of coral cut out of the reef and carried up here. The building is the story, and the royal tomb is in the grounds.

The catch

An active congregation, so the interior is not always open to look round, and Sunday service is a service rather than a tour.

Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
