the West Side

Kaneaki Heiau

A fully restored heiau up Makaha Valley, with reconstructed thatched structures.

Why go

It is the only heiau on Oahu restored to the point where you can see what stood on the platforms, rather than having to imagine it.

The catch

It sits inside a gated residential valley with short opening hours, and access has been closed for long stretches. Check it is open before driving out there, because it is a long way to be turned around.

Getting there

Driving times on real roads, from the same data the trip planner routes on — not straight-line distance.

From Waikīkī1 hr 16 min41 miles
From HNL airport1 hr 17 min37.6 miles
From Mākaha11 min3.2 miles
From Ko Olina38 min14.7 miles

Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
