Visiting · north shore
Three days on the North Shore
Slow days, big beaches and no attempt to see everything. Built for a first trip where you would rather do four things properly than twelve badly.
Most first-time itineraries try to circle the island in a day. This one does not. The North Shore rewards staying put: the drive from Waikiki is over an hour each way, and spending it twice a day means spending a third of your trip in a car.
Before you go
You need a car. There is no practical way to do the North Shore without one, and rental supply on Oahu tightens badly around holidays.
Check the surf forecast before you commit to a swimming day. In winter the same beaches that are flat and friendly in July are genuinely dangerous, and the difference is not subtle.
Day one — arrive slowly
Drive up in the late morning, after the worst of the town traffic. Stop when you feel like stopping. The point of the day is to stop having a schedule.
Day two — water
Pick one beach and stay. Moving between four beaches means four parking searches and no actual time in the water.
Day three — inland
The valleys behind the coast are cooler, greener and almost always emptier than the beaches. A good use of a day when the surf is up and swimming is off.
