The unglamorous list — license, car, doctor, bank — ordered by how long each one takes to actually complete rather than how urgent it feels.
Moving here has a particular failure mode: everything seems manageable until you discover that the thing you needed to book first books out six weeks.
This plan is ordered by lead time, not by urgency. Start the slow things immediately, even if they feel like they can wait.
Week one — start the things with queues
Anything requiring an appointment should be booked in your first few days, before you have unpacked. Appointment-based government services on Oahu book out substantially further than most mainland transplants expect.
Week two — the things that need an address
Several steps depend on proving where you live, so they cannot happen until mail starts arriving. Order matters here more than effort does.
Week three — healthcare
Finding a primary care physician taking new patients takes longer than it does in most mainland cities. Start before you need one.
Week four — the part people skip
Learn your own neighbourhood before you start exploring the island. The people who settle well are the ones who found their regular beach and their regular grocery store early.
