Honolulu
Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art
Doris Duke house on the water at Black Point, built around a collection of Islamic art.

Why go
It is an extraordinary building in an extraordinary position, and the combination of Islamic interiors and a Diamond Head shoreline exists nowhere else.
The catch
Tours only, they sell out well in advance, and they leave from the Honolulu Museum of Art rather than from the house. Book before the trip, not during it.

Getting there
Driving times on real roads, from the same data the trip planner routes on — not straight-line distance.
| From Waikīkī | 10 min | 3.3 miles |
|---|---|---|
| From HNL airport | 43 min | 18.7 miles |
| From Ala Moana | 13 min | 4.7 miles |
| From Downtown Honolulu | 17 min | 6.7 miles |
Add traffic. These are free-flowing times, and the H1 through town at eight in the morning is not free-flowing.
